Revolutionizing Electroretinography: Waseda University Researchers Introduce Comfortable Soft Multi-Electrode System

As the global population ages and technology advances, the prevalence of eye diseases is on the rise. With the increasing use of displays in our daily lives, driven by innovations such as virtual and augmented reality, there is a pressing need for more accurate and comfortable diagnostic tools for the early detection and monitoring of ocular conditions. One such tool is electroretinography (ERG), which measures the electrical potentials generated by neurons and other cells in the retina. However, current ERG devices have limitations, particularly in terms of comfort and accuracy.

ERG measurements are typically taken using Electrodes placed on hard contact lenses, which can make the procedure complex, expensive, and uncomfortable for patients. To address these challenges, a team of researchers from Waseda University, led by Professor Takeo Miyake from the Graduate School of Information, Production and Systems, have developed a novel soft ERG multi-electrode system. Their groundbreaking research, published in Advanced Materials Technologies, details the system’s capabilities. Joining Professor Miyake in the study were Saman Azhari and Atsushige Ashimori from the Graduate School of Information, Production and Systems at Waseda University, as well as Kazuhiro Kimura from the Department of Ophthalmology at Yamaguchi University.

ERG is an essential diagnostic tool for detecting various ocular diseases, including glaucoma, retinitis pigmentosa, and diabetic retinopathy. These conditions can cause abnormalities in a person’s ERG signals. However, current ERG devices often lack the ability to measure multiple localized ERG signals from different regions of the retina simultaneously. The new soft ERG multi-electrode system developed by the Waseda University team aims to overcome these limitations. By creating a flexible and comfortable electrode system, they hope to make ERG measurements more accessible, accurate, and patient-friendly.
