Typically, the Nemo submersible is launched using a crane on a superyacht, but the Beachlauncher offers a more convenient alternative by allowing the sub to be driven into the sea.
The Beachlauncher is a tracked amphibious vehicle that holds the Nemo sub on an integrated platform. It is wirelessly controlled by a user located on the boat or shore. The Beachlauncher carries the sub down the beach or boat ramp and into the water. Once the sub is floating freely on the water’s surface, the Beachlauncher is sent back up to its base on dry land. The process is reversed for bringing the sub back out of the water. The Beachlauncher can be wirelessly summoned from a distance of up to 600 feet.
The new version of the Beachlauncher is specifically designed for use with the Nemo sub. The Nemo sub, manufactured by Dutch company U-Boat Worx, is a single- or two-passenger submarine that can travel at speeds up to 3 knots and dive to depths of up to 100 meters. It offers up to eight hours of operational autonomy.
Beachworks founder, Roger J. Tietz, explains that the Nemo subs are relatively heavy compared to surface watercraft, weighing about 5,000 lbs. Therefore, the hydraulic-drive Nemo version of the Beachlauncher is equipped with a 38-hp Kohler EFI gas engine. The engine operates at 2,800 rpm and has a hydraulic pump that produces up to 3,000 psi of pressure. This pressure powers the vehicle’s two lugged rubber tracks, allowing it to move on both land and water.
One advantage of using the Beachlauncher is that it automatically seeks the required depth for the safe release of the sub, eliminating any uncertainty or guesswork.
The Nemo version of the Beachlauncher is priced at $65,000. This may seem steep, but considering the convenience and ease it offers in launching and retrieving the Nemo sub, it’s certainly a worthwhile investment.
The Beachlauncher can be used on both beaches and boat ramps, making it versatile for various locations and situations.
