Medical Uses: Some medical-grade acrylic resin are approved by FDA for use as sutures and surgical meshes owing to their biocompatibility and durability inside the body. Their non-reactive properties prevent infection.

Blends and Alloys: Acrylic resin are frequently blended with natural fibers like wool, cotton and synthetic fibers like polyester to leverage their respective advantages. These blends expand the range of applications.

Environmental and Economic Impact

While acrylic resin are synthetic and non-biodegradable, they have significantly less environmental impact compared to petroleum-based polymers. Their manufacture uses less energy than most synthetic fabrics. Acrylic resin are also cost-effective due to their low production cost and durability over many washes. They have emerged as an affordable alternative to wool around the world. However, like all synthetics, acrylic fiber production involves greenhouse gas emissions which need to be curtailed. With advances in material science, more sustainable acrylic fiber variants using bio-based raw materials may be commercialized in the future.
